Neutral salt spray test

The neutral salt spray test is a commonly used corrosion testing method.

I. Test Purpose

It is primarily used to evaluate the resistance of materials and their protective coatings to salt spray corrosion, thereby determining the reliability and durability of products in atmospheric environments.

II. Test Principle

A sodium chloride solution of a certain concentration (usually around 5%) is atomized into salt spray and continuously sprayed onto the surface of the test sample under specific temperature and humidity conditions. This simulates the salt spray environment found in marine or industrial atmospheres, accelerating the corrosion process of the material, allowing for quick observation of the corrosion condition.

III. Test Equipment

  1. Salt Spray Test Chamber: Provides a stable salt spray environment, including control over parameters such as temperature, humidity, and spray volume.
  2. Salt Water Storage Tank: Stores and supplies the sodium chloride solution.
  3. Spray System: Atomizes the salt water into fine particles and evenly sprays them onto the sample surface.

IV. Test Procedure

  1. Sample Preparation: Clean and dry the test samples, and mark them as required.
  2. Test Chamber Setup: Set the test chamber parameters, including temperature, humidity, and spray volume. The temperature is typically set at around 35°C, with a relative humidity greater than 95%.
  3. Brine Preparation: Dissolve sodium chloride in distilled water to create a brine solution of the specified concentration.
  4. Sample Placement: Place the samples on the racks within the test chamber, ensuring ample spacing between samples to ensure uniform salt spray contact.
  5. Test Start: Turn on the salt spray test chamber and begin timing. The test duration is determined by the product standard or customer requirements and generally ranges from a few hours to several thousand hours.
  6. Observation and Recording: During the test, regularly observe the corrosion status of the samples and record the type, extent, and duration of corrosion.
  7. Test Completion: When the specified test duration has expired, close the test chamber, remove the samples, clean them, dry them, and evaluate them.

V. Results Evaluation

  1. Appearance Inspection: Observe the sample surface for signs of corrosion, such as rust, blistering, and peeling.
  2. Weight Change: Measure the weight change of the sample before and after the test to determine the extent of corrosion.
  3. Dimensional Change: Use a measuring tool to measure the dimensional change of the sample to assess the impact of corrosion on the sample’s dimensions.
  4. Performance Testing: Perform relevant performance tests on the sample, such as electrical and mechanical properties, to determine the impact of corrosion on product performance.

The neutral salt spray test is an important quality control tool widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and hardware. This test provides a reliable basis for product design, manufacturing, and use, improving product quality and reliability.
